Only four days of Wimbledon 2018 remain and we’re now down to the women’s quarterfinals. Serena Williams, Julia Gorges, Angelique Kerber, Jelena Ostapenko secured their spots for the semi-finals happening today.
After yesterday’s game, the pursuit of Williams for the title has not been interrupted. She defeated Italian opponent Camila Giorgi with 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Williams’ powerful serves scored her a win even after Giorgi won the first set.
One win after another, Gorges’ first career appearance on Wimbledon’s semis was a result of her first quarterfinals at the tournament. As a result, Gorges’ opponent Kiki Bertens is out of the tournament after three sets, 3-6, 5-7, 6-1.
Also victorious is 11th seed Kerber after finishing an exhausting match with 14th seed Daria Kasatkina. Kerber’s 21 year-old opponent was tenacious till the end as they went through six match points. Kerber eventually prevailed, 6-3, 7-5.
Lastly, Dominika Cibulkova’s chances of winning this year’s tournament has ended. Her opponent, 12th seed Ostapenko took the lead and eventually won in straight sets.
Later today, Serena Williams is set to play against Julia Gorges. Meanwhile, Jelena Ostapenko will battle it out with Angelique Kerber.
