As Filipino sees the ravaging effects of climate change hit home, the demands not only for awareness but also for accountability rises. As members of the larger society, the call for help draws our hearts into benevolent efforts and initiatives—and that we extend our reaches and privileges into helping those who need it most. How can we help the underprivileged? Here are some ways:

Forethought In Words and Actions

While many of us are privileged to be spared by the raging storms, we should practice mindfulness in the things that we say or do. We should be sensitive about what we show our friends—especially rabid social media followers, not only to avoid unwanted attention but also to ensure no feelings are hurt. We should be considerate of people who can read our thoughts on social media and see our actions elsewhere.

Think before you post.

Ingraining Charity in Our Endeavors

As we enjoy certain privileges that many others cannot, our active participation can help other people who are suffering from the lack of such. Charity doesn’t have to be monetary. Offering our time and effort in providing solutions helps. It also doesn’t have to be grand and attention-grabbing. Generously tipping and being kind to servers, donating to philanthropic initiatives, and sharing vital information to spread awareness are some of the ways we can do.

Big or small, our contributions go a long way.

Starting Our Young Early

We have witnessed how zillennials have exhibited a keen awareness of both national and global issues. They have developed the rightful need to be attentive and take part in spreading awareness thanks to the rise of social media, paving the way for easy access to information and establishing digital routes of globalization. We need to encourage and reward their genuine curiosity, and if they need it, guide them in understanding these things. Doing so will help future-proof their lives.

The sooner they know, the earlier they learn to be mindful of their actions.
