Nothing beats a stressful day than a good ending served in an opulent platter — Nikkei delivers that and more

For those who have yet to be energized by the change of the year, a visit to a favored destination usually does the trick. With the limitations imposed by a strict lockdown, however, not all choice destinations remain open. And while the pleasures of good food and wine are alleviated by the existence of delivery apps or the presence of a personal chef, nothing beats basking in the summation of a premium experience. Hence, the adaptive strategies forced by the pandemic have pressured these places to enforce stringent measures and safety protocols.

Nikkei, one of Manila’s best food destinations for Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, offered a unique experience last December—a Holiday Tasting Menu. Last December 29, Lifestyle Asia was invited to partake in the feast of delectable delights. The menu, paired with a well-curated set of wines by Wine Depot and presented by Daniel Blais, were truly enjoyable with every bite and with their excellent service and restaurant ambience we know so well, the evening proved to be heavenly for all the senses.

Owners Carlo and Jackie Lorenzana wined and dined with the intimate party, further heightening the experience for the invited guests. And by the end of the night, everyone went home more than satisfied, looking forward to a brand new year and more enriching experiences that are safe, sanitized, and still, sensational. Nikkei’s Holiday Tasting Menu is available till the end of January at Podium and Rockwell.

The menu starts with a refreshing set of three pieces of nigiri (from left to right): Truffle Salmon Nigiri (Aburi Salmon belly, fried nori, and truffle oil), Smoked Ebi Nigiri (prawn, spicy mayo, Leche de tigre, and maldon salt), and Wagyu Skirt Nigiri (Wagyu skirt steak, special oil, and potato strings).

Next is a tasty serving of Unagi Asparagus Roll (unagi, asparagus, sesame seeds, terioyaki sauce, and tobiko mayo). Pleasant on the palate, the unagi’s texture blends well with the rich mayo and the fresh asparagus—achieving a sublime balance in the taste buds.
For the main, a generous serving of Uni Ikura Don (Sapporo-style, uni and ikura on a bowl of sushi rice). Any fan of uni and ikura will enjoy each bite of this seafood pairing.
the second main served, Fideo Saltado (Peruvian-style chow mein, buta no kakuni, shrimp, snapper, squid, vegetables, and egg yolk). The tasty dish serves a medley of flavors—from the wide array of profiles of the seafood down to the well-seasoned noodles.

Dessert is a pair of Matcha Truffles (white chocolate truffles with matcha and cashew nuts). Clearly, a favorite considering the first piece got eaten first before the picture was taken. The nutty blend paired with the matcha’s flavor profile complemented each other well to temper the sweetness of the white chocolate. Perfect.
