MANILA, PHILIPPINES. The Araneta Coliseum was on fire Wednesday evening as the UP Fighting Maroons and Adamson Falcons went head-to-head for a second time for a finals berth in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball, an elusive spot for both teams in the last decade.
With both teams playing their hearts out in an extended match, the Fighting Maroons edged the Fighting Maroons out by two points in over time. The Iskolars ng Bayan charged into the finals after a 32-year drought.
At the end of the first quarter, the UP Fighting Maroons took an early 10-point lead 26-16 over Adamson. The lead was cut down by one at the end of the first half which the Fighting Maroons looking poised for the first finals appearance in three decades, 51-42.
By the third and fourth quarters, all 18,000 spectators of the Big Dome were at the edge of their seats with the Adamson Falcons closing the gap. In the finals moments of the match, Jerome Lastimosa of Adamson, shot a 3-pointer tying the score at 78-78 and sending the match into overtime.
The Falcons took the lead in the final five minutes of the match, but it was all heart for the UP Fighting Maroons. They sealed the match at 89-87 and all of sudden, the entire UP community was crying tears of joy. UP will battle it out for a crown against the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a best of three finals series. The battle of Katipunan will begin on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
