Top Three Classic Holiday Films
Top Three Classic Holiday Films

The holiday season has got to be my most favorite season of all—I’m the type to already have decorations up as soon as September 1st hits. With all the holiday festivities and shopping—I also enjoy watching some of my favorite holiday films. I’ve listed down my top three classics that would definitely help make you feel the holiday spirit—movies that spark happiness and movies that are filled with fashion.

1. White Christmas, 1954

Perhaps my most favorite, White Christmas is such a classic. Just like the track, White Christmas brings you into an ultimate festive frenzy. Directed by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca—already is enough reason to have this on top of your holiday movie list. Starring leading ladies Rosemary Clooney and Vira-Ellen as well as leading men Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye—a totally mesmerizing film filled with music and fashion (note the iconic black evening gown during Rosemary Clooney’s performance of “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me”) all set in a winter wonderland musical.

2. Meet Me in St. Louis, 1944

If you remember that scene in Sex and The City when Carrie Bradshaw was snuggled up watching a film instead of being all glammed up for New Year’s Eve—that film was Vincente Minnelli’s most acclaimed musical, Meet Me in St. Louis. The film also includes one of the most beautiful renditions of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” by none other than Judy Garland. As with many of the finest Hollywood films, the richness of Meet Me in St. Louis brings a certain nostalgia—a celebration of family, a view on how the youth during this era is not all that different from now, and a study on ideological tensions in American culture. A definite must watch as I believe we see Judy Garland, a Hollywood icon of her time, in one of her best performances.

1. It’s A Wonderful Life, 1946

When watching It’s A Wonderful Life, it can be said that the film is a total gem that has truly stood the test of time and that Hollywood doesn’t make films like this anymore, that’s for sure. One of the movies that totally captured my heart. It’s a story about how being the best version of yourself is the key to indeed a wonderful life—it’s about the many ways a perfectly good man can turn sour. A close to home version of another classic, A Christmas Carol, 1938—which is another definite must on my list. It’s A Wonderful Life is one of those films that has a relevant story up until now—a film that conveys important messages one being that one’s life has purpose and has the power to touch others in ways one may not understand completely.

There’s just something about these films that spark a certain type of nostalgia we all know and almost like a comforting blanket—just the right amount of laughter and tugging of heartstrings. A perfect selection to watch with the family or by yourself this holiday season.
