What do you get when you put together two of the hottest singles in the world of entertainment? Nothing short of spontaneous combustion. I’m probably more invested in this romance than my own, but it has been a joy to follow the love story of these two.
Nothing in The Biz has been as polarizing lately as the whirlwind romance of 44-year old bachelor mega hunk leading man Derek Ramsay and 33-year old actress/heiress Ellen Adarna. Their love affair is the toast of quarantine season and at the same time the target of jealous bashers. Both coming from very high profile breakups (him with GMA leadinglady Andrea Torres and her with iconic superstar John Lloyd Cruz with whom she shares a son with, Elias), neither of them was really looking for love.
How it All Began
In a firsthand interview with me for Mega Entertainment’s March 2021 issue, Derek said that on the night he first met Ellen—a meeting arranged by his friend and Ellen’s co-star, John Estrada—he had pretty much been under her spell. It took just one dinner for him to be totally smitten.
Ellen, on the other hand, did not want anything serious. In my exclusive interview with the couple on my online talk show, #LiveWithG3, she told me that she saw him as a “fuccboi.” But even she wasn’t prepared for the pheromone attack coming from the seemingly unattainable Mr. Ramsay.
“Shet, ang gwapo mo!” Those were the first words she ever said to him. And Derek didn’t know what to make of her.
“We met at that restaurant. I walked in with my nephew and my niece. Dinala ko nephew and niece ko para may excuse akong umuwi ng maaga. Kasi ayokong pumunta. Pinilit talaga ako ni John (Estrada). John is my good friend and John is like, ‘Pumunta ka na dito. Bigay mo na sa akin ito please,’” Derek explains.
“So, I went. Sabi ko, ‘Okay lang I bring my nephew and my niece?’ Sabi niya no problem,” he continues. “So, I walk in and I don’t see Ellen. I say hi to John and I say hi to the people there, and then I look to my right and Ellen is coming from the toilet. And literally, this is what happened. This is no joke. Sabi niya, ‘Shet ang guwapo mo!’ (laughs). No joke. Those were the first words we exchanged with each other. I was like, ‘Thank you and hi I’m Derek.”
Of In-depth Conversations The Night After
That first night ended up with Derek taking Ellen home because she was staying in the same village in the South as him.
“So we ended the night. We went down to the lobby of Shang. Her car is not there yet. And I’m like, ‘You know we’re neighbors right? I can give you a ride home.’ And she goes, ‘Ako game ako diyan!’ (laughs) so she tells her PA, ‘O ikaw na maghintay ng driver sasama na ako.’”
“And then I take her home and that’s where I saw, the conversation we had in the car, there was four of us naman in the car, na may depth pala itong tao na ‘to. We had a really good conversation going. I took her home. She just said goodbye and just walked into her house. So, I dropped her off. I said, ‘Wow she’s really smart. She’s super smart.’ But I wasn’t looking for anything. And then the next time we spoke was on the next day. I said it was nice to meet you and then we’re talking about the dinner,” Derek added.
A Drunken Evening of Magic and Surprises
At the dinner Derek hosted, Ellen was the first to arrive. In fact, she was even early. “Excited,” Derek teased.
“We sat outside by the pool and we talked and had a few drinks and the chef was kind of late so we had more than a few drinks. By the time dinner was served, medyo nakainom na kami and that’s where the magic started. We ended the evening with Ellen just getting off the chair and going to the couch and passing out.”
“I went over just to see if she’s okay and then the PA goes, ‘Huwag! Sasampalin ka niyan. Huwag mong gisingin yan!’ (laughs). So, I carried her and I put her in my bedroom. I put you in my bed and I told her PA, ‘Jess, dito na kayo matulog at dun na ako matutulog sa isang kuwarto.’ And then she woke up and they snuck out of the house. I went and wala na sila sa kuwarto. The door was left open, the aircon was left open. And then after that, the rest is history,” Derek tells me.
Knowing That She was The One
It took only two meetings for Derek to know Ellen was “the one.”
Shortly after, Ellen moved into Derek’s new mansion where they got to know each other better.
“Kasi she was living with her auntie and she would go in and out of the house so the aunt was really scared so she was going to move somewhere. So, I offered because she was going to go into taping naman. Sabi ko, ‘Why don’t you just stay here na lang? It’s safer for you.’ The thing is, we knew na eh. We know,” he added.
During the time Ellen started staying with him, it didn’t long before Derek finally asked her to officially be his girlfriend.
“I asked her to be my girlfriend. I wanted to know if she wanted commitment. We’d be talking lying down beside each other and I don’t know how I told her that I loved her. I don’t know what happened to me. It just happened and I got cold sweats,” Derek confessed.
“Nasuka ako…Both of us have no game in this relationship. Like pareho kaming naging tameme na torpe, hindi namin alam how to act, like high school (students). We didn’t even kiss during ligawan. Imagine—I’m a man and I can hear her talk to her friends saying, ‘He doesn’t even touch me. He hasn’t done anything, oh my God.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh wow.’ I felt something different. Like totally out of this world na I’ve never felt before. And I want to figure out what it was.”
Of Love, Leading to The Proposal
They said “I love you” even before they kissed and officially started dating on February 4th of this year.
“Two weeks pa lang, in love na siya sa ‘kin,” Ellen playfully teases in the Instagram Live interview with me.
But as confident as Ellen was about Derek’s affections towards her, she never expected that he was going to ask her to marry him. “I didn’t know that he was going to propose…I didn’t know na parang may surprise kasi they planned it so well,” she said.
To prepare for the proposal, Derek pretended to go to the neighbor’s house to play a console game because the air conditioner broke and people were “destroying stuff” at their house, Ellen said.
“So he was playing there for 30 minutes, nag-drama siya. And then, I really didn’t know that something like that was happening. Hindi pa ako nag-ayos…Buti na lang talaga maganda ako,” she joked.
On the other hand, Derek said, “I wanted her to feel that it was just a birthday party.”
Ellen told me that Derek proposed in the middle of a parlor game in front of all their friends and family. “They showed this video pa of my friends and family so parang sunod-sunod yung surprise. And then after the video thingy, they asked me to play this game…so my mind was off it. Wala na akong time na mag isip-isip or mag-assume,” she said.
“When he asked me to marry him, I forgot that I was supposed to say yes. Parang automatic na akala ko na understood na ng lahat na “yes” na yun. Then his sister asked, ‘Huy what’s your answer?’ and then dun na ako sumagot.”
Thoughts on Marriage
From being boyfriend-girlfriend on February 4, the couple became engaged on March 30—not even a month later.
“I never wanted to get married,” Ellen revealed to me in the interview. “Today was the first day I thought about my wedding.”
Contrary to what the public has said about Derek never settling down, he always knew he wanted to get married eventually. And when he met Ellen, he told me that he was so happy he waited.
When I asked Ellen what changed her mind about marriage and what he was sure about with Derek that she wasn’t sure about with her ex, John Lloyd, she answers me with straight honesty: “First is the connection, (it) is the communication.”
“He met me at the right time. He met me because, during the pandemic, I fixed myself, I worked on myself. I did a lot of inner work,” Ellen proudly admits. “So, at that time, I knew what I wanted na. I knew what was good for me. I knew what was bad for me. And then when I made better choices and for myself, that’s when things started to come in and everything made sense. I didn’t have that desperate vibe of trying to look for love, of looking for a guy to complete me. I was already complete.”
“And then when Derek came, he just made it better, more beautiful. So, timing si Derek talaga. That’s how our relationship works. We communicate well,” Ellen finishes.
“Ellen is not saying and I’m not saying I’m better than JL or better than her exes. It’s not that,” Derek adds. “Or (that) Ellen is better than any of my exes.”
“We (simply) met at the right time. We were meant to be and that’s how it works,” Derek says with complete certainty.
And when it works, it just works. And when you know, you just know. Derek and Ellen’s whirlwind romance shows us all that love, sometimes happens so fast it makes your head spin. But as soon as you steady your gaze, the person in front of you is the one meant for you all along.
The Wedding of the Year
Now that Derek and Ellen have found each other, it’s time for their happy ending and beginning as a married couple.
The couple tells me that they both want a simple wedding and that it will happen this year. Because why wait when you’re sure, right? It took all only of the first quarter of this year for their love to go from zero to getting married!
“I told him (about) my dream wedding—I just want to elope,” Ellen confesses. “I don’t want a big wedding. I don’t want to wear a gown, like all that fancy whatever. I hate gowns.”
“We actually spoke this morning. Meron kaming naisip the purpose of this… ‘I want to marry you. I’m not gonna marry you because I want to wear a gown or I want people to look at me and think I’m the most beautiful bride in the world. That’s not my point,” Ellen proclaims.
In short, “Expect a simple wedding,” Derek and Ellen tell me.
And yes, sometimes it’s just as simple as that. You meet, you fall in love and it changes everything you’ve ever believed in. For my friends Derek Ramsay and Ellen Adarna, it was only a matter of time.
