So much has changed over the past year, and yet, this global disruption has given me a unique opportunity to take a step back back, to reflect, and to focus specifically on aspects of my life that I want to improve. Because of the pandemic, good health has been at the forefront, but interestingly enough, so has good skincare.
It’s funny because I considered myself to be a fairly health-conscious person. As much as I pay good attention to what I eat and drink and how often I exercise, there is also a more holistic way that I need to approach good health. It’s more than just the food I eat—it’s also the thoughts I allow in my mind, the energy I choose to be around, and yes, even the cosmetics I apply on my skin.
The Concept Of Clean Beauty
I became more and more intrigued by the term “clean beauty” and found myself diving deep into the internet to learn more about this concept. From there, I came across Ilia Beauty, a Canadian beauty line, and I soon began reading more about their range of Skincare-Powered Makeup.
But what is clean beauty anyway? According to Sasha Plavsic—the creator of Ilia Beauty and one of the leading pioneers of the clean beauty movement—it is “where the best of natural and the best of synthetic collide.”
“You take the safest of the synthetic [ingredients] and the safest of the natural,” she explains. “Because not every natural ingredient is good for the skin, nor is every synthetic [ingredient] bad. So you take the best of both to create a really efficacious product that works.”
And for me, the most important thing is to understand the difference because of what we know for certain—what we apply to our skin ends up inside of us. And just as we take it upon ourselves to carefully avoid ingesting anything toxic or poisonous, shouldn’t it also follow that we must do our best to avoid using harmful ingredients that our skin can absorb?
The Importance Of Using Good Ingredients
Sasha also points out that we aren’t aware of how the smell of our favorite cosmetics might actually be harming our skin. “A lot of times, there’s so much perfume in makeup to hide the ingredients. And that in itself can really be bad for your skin. It actually breaks down your skin,” she explains.
It’s for this reason that Ilia Beauty does its best to present its ingredients as they are within the product. Added ingredients like perfumes and silicones might be used to hide certain scents and textures, but end up harming our skin in the long run—things that Ilia Beauty avoids as much as possible. The honesty they show in their products not only helps win their customers’ trust but also ensures that your skin stays healthy.
“It’s like an elimination diet,” Sasha says. “What normally would aggravate or could potentially cause some type of unsettled skin, so to speak, or could provoke it to cause problems… we’re removing those items.”
Additionally, I love the idea of a fusion between skincare and make-up—especially one that contains ‘active’ levels of ingredients. These not only would enhance what I already have, but also, in their own words, “protect and revive” my skin.
Going Clean With Clean Beauty
Admittedly, one of the things that made me hesitate to go clean with my cosmetics is that natural and organic options have never worked for me in the past. The texture, color, and how long it would last on my face always seemed…well, disappointing. And while my conscience suggests that I use products that are natural and environmentally sound, I’d keep it real and say that my heart will insist that I put my best face forward. Always.
As the mother of an energetic toddler, concealer is my best friend, and the constant lack of sleep has forced me to become very particular about which one I use. When great texture and amazing coverage are combined with skin-brightening ingredients such as Stabilized Vitamin C and Mastic (which naturally mattifies and refines the look of pores) I’m not just convinced—I’m hooked!
Their award-winning Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 has also become a staple in my daily regimen. Created with a blend of Hyaluronic Acids, plant-based squalene, and Niacinamide, it is exactly what it claims to be: a light moisturizing tint that blurs my imperfections and protects my skin from UVA, UVB, UVC, blue light, and infrared rays. Super, indeed.
Of Multi-purpose Products That Work For Everyone
What I appreciate the most about Ilia Beauty is that it seems to have a deep understanding of what I need and don’t need. If you go through their website, you aren’t going to find, say, 100 shades of lipstick (the number though, is closer to 20). They only have two colors for their gel eyeliner: brown (Dusk) and black (Twilight). But what they do take careful consideration of is having the necessary array of products to help you look your best. These come in a wide range of shades that will match and flatter as many varying skin tones and undertones as possible, and that includes Filipinos. Yes, they take inclusivity in this sense very seriously.
Multi-purpose products also seem to be their thing, and I suspect that has something less to do with the fact that Sasha is a savvy businesswoman, and more of because she is a committed wife and mother. We all know that mothers don’t have hours to spend on make-up; we have at most 10 minutes—and that’s on a good day.
One of those products I like to keep on hand is the Multi-Stick, which is a creamy lip-and-cheek formula I can quickly dab on right before stepping out of the car, or right after removing my mask. It gives me a pretty rosy flush like I just finished playing tag with my daughter—but thankfully minus the sweat.
Their latest product—the Blue Light Mist—is an innovative makeup setting spray that hydrates and protects skin from blue light and pollution. And God knows I probably need gallons of this, especially since Zoom meetings have become the norm and Netflix binging has become the new night out.
Making a Better World by Helping
But there is also a much bigger picture that needs to be considered. While self-care is important, caring for each other and the planet should also fit in the same equation—especially now, in light of an ongoing pandemic.
I think it says a lot about a brand when they choose to dedicate time, money, and effort not just in creating products, but also in cleaning up the waste this inevitably produces as well. And since some of Ilia’s products already protect your skin from the harmful effects of pollution, it makes perfect sense for them to try to address the issue at its source, too.
Thus, the brand is encouraging recycling by moving onto mono-material packaging that is safe for the planet (and the product). Additionally, Ilia Beauty is now dedicating 1% of its profits to 1% for the Planet, a global movement that inspires businesses to support environmental solutions.
A Brand that Cares
Sasha’s reasons for working towards better sustainability and waste reduction come from a place I know all too well: a mother’s concern for the sort of world our children will be living in.
“All the weather changes, and all the climate issues that we’re seeing…[and] people are asking, ‘What’s going on?’ The world is changing,” she says. “You have a child, and I have children—will they have children? Will their children have children?”
“I spent the last 10 years creating so much, [and] now, I have to [also] figure out also how to clean it up,” she continues. “For me, I think that’s my next purpose: to make sure there’s a home for my babies.”
And it’s because of these things—plus their tireless research on the most potent, effective, and safe formulations, the careful consideration of our needs, and their unwavering commitment to transparency—that make transitioning to clean beauty seamless and easy.
All these, plus the fact that their products simply work so well, make Ilia Beauty the obvious choice for people like me, who not only want to look good but feel good as well. And being able to combine all that with the little things that help leave behind a healthier world for our kids is a change I’d be very, very happy to make.
