Classic, simple, and timeless. Pearls are luxurious pieces that seamlessly match any outfit. Here are some must-haves for your collection.

While most people gravitate to the brilliance and shining facets of a diamond, there’s something about the gentle and luminous glow of a pearl that captivates just as many people. In fact, the Philippines is dubbed as the “Pearl of the Orient,” since it is one of the many known producers of pearls.

Just as pearls—both natural and cultured—occur in different shapes, they too come in a wide variety of colors. Familiar colors include white and cream, but the palette of colors stretches on to include almost every hue. But that’s not all that there is to it. Pearls are made up of different colors that interplay with one another—the main color (or bodycolor) and additional colors called overtones, which come in pink (sometimes called rosé), green, purple, or blue.

And that iridescent, shimmering interplay of colors that some pearls show? Gemologists call that orient.

Produced by Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines (usually in Palawan), South Sea pearls come in white, silver, and gold. Unlike most pearls, which take less than 2 years to form, South Sea Pearls take 2 to 4 years to form, at most. And just as the value of a pearl is ranked based on the depth of its color, the gold ones are more valuable. This is especially true when they showcase the deepest, shimmering golden color—referred to as 24-karat.

Pearl Jewelry for the Modern Day Woman

Unlike most faceted gemstones that glimmer in bold, resplendent colors, pearls showcase milky, soft tones—making it a subtle accessory that pairs well with any outfit. But gone are the days when these perfect shining spheres are reserved for older and more mature women. In fact, brands like ARAO, All That Glitters, and Modela Filipina have taken the humble pearl and have elevated it into modern-day pieces—fitting for the modern-day woman.

“Pearls are organic, natural gems that you can wear every day with anything,” Mirabel Rosar, founder of Arao, shares. “They are pieces that you grow and evolve with.”

Creative director and designer of All That Glitters Amanda Luym adds, “We wanted them [our pieces] to be ‘not-so-classic and create a more youthful aesthetic.”

“We celebrate girl bosses, independent ladies, women at the forefront of this pandemic, wives, mothers, and sisters who run the world,” the owner of Modela Filipina, Mai Trabado emphasizes. “Wearing a piece of jewelry and letting it empower you through your everyday hustle, taking charge, and making confident decisions—this is the mark of a Modela Filipina.”

From lustrous baroques that hang on your ears to cascading pearl strands, or a quintessential necklace that gracefully loops around your neck, pearl jewelry is as versatile as it is essential. Whether the intention is to flaunt a statement piece or subtly add color to a casual look, one thing is certain: pearls are an everyday luxury—a timeless, heirloom piece that no modern-day woman can do without.

Timeless Classics: ARAO Fine Jewelry

Ethically sourced, sustainable, and long-lasting, ARAO (from the Filipino word “araw“, meaning sun) pieces are made with high-quality pieces that are, in the brand’s words, “accessories you can grow with.” Following a no-waste mantra, the pearls used for their jewelry are directly sourced from a sustainable pearl farm in Palawan, Philippines. What’s more, both the pearl and shell are integrated into their jewelry pieces—set in your choice of 14K or 18K gold.
