A Pandemic Wedding: From Italy to the Philippines, With Love

Against all odds, this couple found a way to celebrate their wedding, both in Italy and in the Philippines—surrounded by loved ones.

Hope. Even the tiniest glimmer of hope can bring us through the hardest of times.

Having to plan the wedding in the middle of the pandemic—and all the way from Italy, too!—was no easy task. Julia and Gio, for example, had to move the wedding a few times to adjust to the government-mandated protocols—one of which included the entry and quarantine rules for non-Filipinos.

Similarly, most of our overseas couples (especially those with a foreign partner) had to postpone their wedding to a later date, as they are concerned that their other halves couldn’t enter the country.

From Milan to Sorsogon

Julia and Gio initially got married in Milan and celebrated with Gio’s family before flying to the Philippines for another church wedding. This time around, the couple celebrate with Julia’s family back in Manila. Because of this, it was a bit easier for Gio to enter the Philippines.

The couple first presented their certificate of marriage to the Philippine Embassy in Milan. Eventually, they flew into Manila together and presented the very same certificate as soon as they arrived. After this, they were able to enter the country swiftly without having any problems. They just, of course, had to go through the ten-day quarantine.

Soon after, they were able to drive all the way from Manila to Sorsogon for their wedding—of course, following the protocols mandated by the local government unit of the province.

Against All Odds

With everything that has happened in between, the couple already knew that uncertainty was unavoidable. Anything can change at any given moment. And true enough, with just a few days before their wedding, there were speculations of a lockdown and that the formal announcement would happen the day before.

Can you imagine the stress and anxiety that this news caused, especially for a couple that were about to get married?

Thankfully, Julia and Gio, together with all their guests and suppliers, were ready enough with a Plan B. Yes, even when everyone was already in Sorsogon for the wedding. Against all odds, the couple felt a renewed sense of strength from the people surrounding them and the support they gave. Julia and Gio were also grateful that the wedding celebration pushed through in the end, despite all the setbacks and scares that happened to them.

Of Nostalgic Memories and Heartfelt Sentiments

Siama Hotel, a resort located in the heart of Sorsogon, was the chosen venue for the wedding. This was a sentimental place for Julia, as this was where her family did her send-off before she left for Milan to be based there with Gio. Additionally, the resort is the perfect venue for intimate weddings. Its minimalist and nature-inspired façade provided an effortless beauty that will make anyone instantly fall in love with the place.

The flowers that Gathered Creatives styled also held a special place in Julia’s heart. Orchids were, after all, the flowers that both her grandmother and mother (whom she was very close to), grew as a hobby. This pasttime was also the reason why she has always been drawn to flowers.

Julia also made sure that she stuck with her Filipino heritage, which was why her bridal gown and the groom’s barong were carefully designed by Vania Romoff and Joey Samson, respectively. She also shared with us how they had to do all the fittings via Zoom calls and how they managed to properly take each other’s measurements. Julia also had to fit her gown while in quarantine. And Gio had to even hide in the restroom, so that he would not see it!

Celebrating Weddings Amid the Pandemic

All these things—may it be little or small happenings—all add up to the fulfillment and the bliss after the wedding is done. So go ahead, endure, and go through all the difficulties. But also appreciate the littlelest of moments and feed on the hope that you will still be able to celebrate this important milestone in your lives. Yes, it will happen soon enough, even with the presence of all the precautions and uncertainties.

Congratulations to the happy couple!
