Lara Villafuerte: A Woman of Faith, Service, and Glory

Chief Financial Officer of Viroshield Corporation, wife to a Congressman, and mom to 4 kids. With faith as her driving force, Lara Villafuerte handles all these with ease. This is her story.

Lara Villafuerte’s days start at 4 am. At an hour when most people sleep, Lara is devoted to dedicating that time to herself and her Maker. “I sit in my favorite space and read my Bible. That is my quiet time with God and it is then that I receive instructions on how to prioritize my day,” shares Lara.

A Day in Her Life

At around 7:30 am, the smell of freshly brewed coffee surrounds her kitchen as she gets ready to work. This part of her day is dedicated to giving instructions to the factory. Since September 2020, Lara and her husband have taken on more responsibility than usual. She recounts, “My husband and I put up a fully automatic manufacturing face mask factory after finding out that there were only two suppliers in the entire country.”

They were quick on their feet and managed to set up a factory that followed proper protocol and the principles of negative airflow. As the Chief Financial Officer of Viroshield Corporation, protection had always been their priority.

Of course, everything was different before the pandemic. “Balancing my life as the wife of a governor and the CFO of our businesses was a bit tricky—it seemed like there was never enough time for everything,” she shares.

What’s more, Lara observes that the pandemic forced everyone to slow down, including herself. And that allowed her to prioritize what she thought was important. “I guess it was God’s way of working things out for our own good and for those He has called to do His purpose.”

On Facing Challenges and Having Faith

Having faith as her compass is central to Lara, who turns to God for her every decision. She explains, “I don’t really worry about challenges. My faith sees me through every challenge and I am no longer moved by what mere men can do to me or what people might think. I am more concerned with what my God might think of me, and so, I make sure we live within the bounds of what God expects.”

When put into action, the results are clear. Their face masks are now being sold to clinics and hospitals here and abroad, allowing more people to be safe.

But even with these small victories, Lara recognizes that the pandemic is still raging. What’s more, it’s especially hard for working women who are eager to prove themselves but have to remain seated for now. Her advice? “Remain steadfast in your faith [and] keep praying for a solution to this pandemic. We are resilient in whatever situation we are in. We can create businesses even in our little corners of the world.”

Diversification, Lara emphasizes, is also key. “Life will get better. Just hang on. Do what you have to do for now, but be ready for better times!” she adds.

Life at Home

“We were 19 when Lray and I got married. We were actually kids ourselves!” shares Lara. Young as they may be, she believes that they are soulmates. “He is the man God made for me and I am the woman He made for Lray.”

This realization, however, was not clear at the time they married. She continues, “I found out after 30 years of being married—so it has been 12 peaceful, beautiful glorious years. I now know that my role is to help and support him as he works to give our family a great future—whether in business or in politics.”

Lara gave birth at ages 20, 22, 25, and 27. “I have four grown kids now,” she shares. “And we trained them to be self-sufficient and independent from a very young age because we were busy growing our own businesses.” Adding that they were learning at the same rate their children were, Lara says, “We learned the values of integrity, quality of service, patience, endurance, resilience, and risk-taking. These were the same values we quickly passed to our children growing up.”

“We treated them as though they were like us: grown kids,” she continues. “They’ve been taught responsibility and to realize that they have the freedom to do what they want [while] being able to handle the consequences of their actions. [And with that comes] enjoying the rewards of hard work and being patient.”

On Work-Life Balance and Future Plans

Despite cross-sharing values over business and parenting, Lara and LRay make it a point to have a definite divide. “When we are working, we are fully there 100%. We aren’t thinking of our children because we knew that they were okay. They understood that their parents are working hard now to spend quality time with them later. And when we are with the children—on vacations, dinners, or weekends—we make sure we are also fully with them 100%.

The couple also extends this philosophy to their employees, “They know better than to call us while we are with our family and it’s the same work ethic when it comes to their families.”

Lara hopes that the foundation they’ve established will help set them up well for the future. “In 10 years, I see a very bright future. I will hopefully be retired by then, surrounded by my eight grandkids. I see my husband continuing to do what he loves most, which is serving the people of this nation in whatever capacity and improving the lives of every Filipino.”

“The same goes for my sons Miguel and Luigi, who are following in their father’s footsteps. I also see my other two children, Julio and Gabriela, being happily married to loving partners with kids of their own—doing what they love most,” she reveals.

Seeing Christ in Life-changing Moments

More than just the past and future, Lara believes that she has life-changing moments every day, which all add up to where she is now. “All of these ‘moments’ have led me to see Christ and find the true meaning of life and my purpose. Now, my life is so much simpler and quieter but is in no way dull. I have found my purpose and I feel so much fulfillment.”

She shares that she became more caring towards others and is now focused on building the house of God instead of just growing her wealth. “I learned that God blesses us, trusts us with opportunities to create wealth so we can bless and help our less fortunate and spread the gospel of Christ, in the end, He is glorified!”
