Just What the Doctor Prescribed: A Mother’s Love

Juggling both a career and motherhood may not be easy, but Dr. Emmar Ozaeta shows you that with patience and love, it too can be done.

If you were to ask Dr. Emmar Ozaeta what motherhood is all about, her quick answer would be “responsibility and sacrifice”. And coming from someone who has gone through medical school, her words carry a lot of weight.

“I spent a lot of years studying medicine, but the learning experience of motherhood is endless,” shares the mother of Maro, Lala, and Marya. “In the 25 years of my motherhood journey, I have learned a handful of life lessons. And the most important thing I’ve learned is that you won’t (ever) regret spending time with your children.”

Of Balancing Work and Family Life

This successful entrepreneur is the President and CEO of Everlast Agro-Industrial Corp and Gemsun Farm. In addition, she is also the VP of Purchasing for Optimal Laboratories. According to Emmar, making time is not the easiest thing in the world. But as the old saying goes, “if there’s a will, there’s a way” and Emmar is dedicated to finding that way.

“I trained myself to go home as early as I can so I can always be available for my children,” she shares. Balancing motherhood and career has never been easy, but seeing how family time is heavily valued at home, Emmar did her best to move heaven and earth to meet that need. “I want to make them feel that family is their strongest support system.”

Clearly, the sacrifices have been many and heavy, but Emmar maintains that there is no compromise to be made. She is willing to go out of her way to uphold her duty. She adds: “As a mother, it is our responsibility to raise our children in a Godly way. And (this includes) sacrificing and redesigning our life every day for the welfare of our children.”

And her greatest joy? Witnessing the bloom of well-adjusted adults. “Seeing my children grow to be good citizens, responsible, God-fearing and respectful individuals makes me feel like I’m doing my purpose in life.”

To her, there is no replacement for that sense of fulfillment.

A Mother Learning to Let Go

While Emmar knew that her birds would soon be ready to leave the nest, the reality of it still hit hard. Her son, having just graduated from college, wanted to see the world for himself and fly on his own. Emmar recounts, “It was one of my most challenging experiences. They teach you how to raise them, but no amount of warning ever prepared me.”

Emmar believes she had done her best to raise her kids, but she was always cautious about life outside. No mother, after all, would want to see their kids hurt. But even so, she knows that this decision will allow them to grow stronger. She shares, “As a mom, it was so painful to let go of your child knowing that he was once under your wing and is now ready to fly on his own. But we also have to respect their decisions and love them unconditionally.”

Much like birds, the only way to leave the nest is to learn how to fly. “They will learn as they travel their journey. There will be times where they get hurt and you cannot do anything, but we should never get tired of guiding them.” As psychology would have it, experience has always been a good teacher. And Emmar, despite being tempted to intervene, found the strength in herself to let the universe teach hard lessons.

“I allow my children to make their own decision to be able to help them be stronger,” she explains. “They may fall sometimes, but I am always there to guide them. Like a seed, we nurture them and allow them to stand the storms in life.”

Loving Yourself

At the end of the day, Emmar declares that there never was a perfect parenting formula. “We can only give them advice or guide them on the right path, but the final forming of our children’s character still lies in their own hands so don’t be too harsh on yourself.”

When all is said and done, Emmar believes that at the end of the day parents should also spare some love for themselves. “Always spare love for yourself. You cannot pour from an empty cup.”
