As I look back on the past holiday seasons, I can’t help but realize how different this year’s celebrations will be, and how that’s not necessarily a sad thing. The holiday season always entailed big family reunions, company Christmas parties, and other social events. It was a busy yet happy season filled with gift shopping, catching up, and traveling. By contrast, this year is filled with realizations, safety precautions, and new traditions.
For the past five years since Scarlet was born, we created a Christmas Tree tradition to make this season extra special. Stephen Brown, Oprah’s decorator from Glitterville, would create a unique theme for us each year. Straight from Oprah’s house, he would fly here to decorate ours. As an avid fan of Oprah, I would always look forward to this. Since we can’t have that special tradition this year, we started a new one with Scarlet. As opposed to previous years, where Scarlet would have an idea of what would be waiting for her under the tree, she’s now completely clueless as to what she’ll be receiving. I recommend the element of surprise to make the holiday season even more exciting for your loved ones.
With less focus on our Christmas tree this year, we placed even greater importance and emphasis on our belen. Let’s remember that Jesus is the reason for this season. As Scarlet grows up, she’s beginning to understand the story of Christmas—and its true meaning—better. In fact, in school, she’s taught that Christmas is not about Santa Claus; it’s about celebrating the birth of Jesus, who saved us from our sins.
If there’s one thing this pandemic taught us, it’s not about getting what you wish for; rather, it’s about appreciating all the blessings you have. And for my family, these are the simple things in life. As we look forward to finally being able to have social gatherings and longing to hug our loved ones again for Christmas, may we never forget the lessons we learned from the pandemic. These are to prioritize our health and well-being, and value time for the family.
