How My Family Made Celebrations at Home Special

From giving flowers and gifts to spending quality time, celebrations spent at home can be special when spent with the people you love.

Having survived this long in the pandemic, the family has adjusted well to staying at home and enjoying their everyday lives. But even so, life goes on. Just like everyone else, we still celebrate momentous occasions, achievements, and milestones—only in the comfort of our homes. And although different from the pre-pandemic days, this year’s festivities are just as heartwarming and memorable as ever.

Yes, May is a month filled with celebrations and these are some of the highlights in my home.

Of Heartwarming Celebrations and Gifts

Mother’s Day started with me receiving preserved boxed flowers from my husband and the children. I used both as centerpieces for my red and gold table arrangement. And it looked stunning!

I also got a two-tiered cake adorned with beautiful blue rosebuds from Max’s Corner Bakery. The brand now lets customers choose the flavor, design, and even the icing colors of their baked creations. But mine was personally designed by Mr. F, which made it even more special.

Family celebrations are sweeter with these custom-made cakes, featuring Baked Creations from Max’s Corner Bakery.

Of course, the day would not be complete without the kids’ handmade gifts. My daughter made a video featuring all my favorite Korean actors, while my son crafted a funny pink digital Mother’s Day greeting. Both cracked me up!

My husband and I also celebrated the completion of our vaccine doses. Knowing that we will not end up in critical care and will be able to look after our loved ones is indeed a blessing! While many are still waiting for doses from their respective LGU’s, we were lucky to get ours on the first week—right when it was made available in our city.

For me, whatever brand of vaccine is on hand is the best one for you, at this point.

Moving Up and Moving On

My son’s high school graduation was a very proud moment for us all. Although the ceremony was done online, it was still a happy occasion that we celebrated.

I’ve always been tough on my kids when it comes to academics. Admittedly, I was especially tough on my firstborn Miguel and despite this, he performed outstandingly in school. Having established good study habits early on, I was able to let him be as early as his grade school years.

Looking at Miguel now and seeing all that he has achieved, no one would ever think that he had very delayed speech as a toddler. I was working as a lawyer full time when he was born and he was left in the care of nannies who put him in front of the television most times. So, I took an extended leave, bought him Baby Einstein books, and read to him incessantly. I even brought him to bookstores and gave him boxes of puzzles to work on.

A week shy of his 4th birthday, my son said his first words. It was like winning the lottery! Then as soon as he spoke, my boy learned to write, read and solve math problems. By the time he was 6, he was already doing Algebra. And at 11, he went to Singapore to compete in the Math Olympics as part of the Philippine Math Delegation.

Presently, Miguel has been accepted to college as early as Grade 11, having successfully taken part in and passing the Ateneo Junior Summer Seminar (AJSS) program. But beyond his academic achievements, I am proud to have raised a responsible and loving son who still shows me so much affection to this day.

A Change in Mindset

Looking at the mirror, I see a much different person compared to the past me from 2020. I was highly anxious, could not sleep, and was very afraid of getting sick. In fact, I hated it when my husband would say, “It’s all in the mind.”

He was correct though. I searched, and in time, found happiness in many things. From growing a vegetable patch to watching RuPaul (and eventually K-dramas), organizing my home, and praying, I have now transformed into a much more joyful version of myself. Lately, I’ve even started collecting plates and doing table settings while unconsciously humming Disney songs (true!). All in good fun!

Pursuing my current passion—tablescaping! I love surprising my family with different table arrangements. All abaca placemats, table napkins, and napkin rings are from Placemat Queen.

By the way, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s the perfect moment to reassess how we are doing. Life will continue to hand us trials but we must persevere to overcome – one day at a time. There is much to celebrate!

In this extraordinary year, may we all bloom where we are planted. Ad maiorem Dei gloriam!

My family and my source of joy.
