Homebound and Healthy: The Magic in Spending Time with Family

Even while at home for the summer, there are many fun ways to keep busy. Paulyne Fermin shares how she and her family have fun—with health and safety in mind.

Summer is here! School is out, which means that the kids have almost three months of free time on their hands.

Normally, we would be on a plane halfway across the globe once the vacation starts. However, like last year, we had to stay home this time around. That’s why our challenge now is for the whole family to remain physically fit, mentally sound and spiritually nourished until the world heals.

Sanitizing Deliveries

A clean home is a good home and it all starts with keeping our space sanitized and safe. Since our helpers are our frontliners, they continue to strictly follow our house rules.

This includes the rule that all deliveries cannot be accepted by hand. We have a table by the front gate for packages. Non-food items stay there for a day and are sprayed with Lysol by Yaya, who has to wear a mask and face shield. Parcels are then gathered in a room and subjected to UV lights via our UVKLeene Area Sterilizer.

I use the UvKleene wand to sanitize small items like my cellphone, laptop, and money. The Area Sanitizer is good in disinfecting rooms as big as 90 square meters.  We rely on the UvKleene 7stage UVC Air Purifier to keep indoor air fresh and our allergies at bay.

On the other hand, perishable items are sprayed with Kurin water. And anybody who goes outside for errands must use our outdoor showers and wash their clothes at the same time.

Cleaning Our House

I’ve even gone the extra mile and had our cars, beds, and couches disinfected, too. Thankfully, this was all done just before the second lockdown. Clean Zone Philippines double-coated all of our vehicles with Germagic Map1-PRO. This award-winning solution is proven effective against SARS-CoV-2, viruses, and all existing pathogens. Plus, it lasts for 90 days!

They also brought new life to our furniture by using industrial-grade machines for deep cleaning—by shampooing, vacuuming, and removing longstanding stains. The sanitizing solution was then sprayed after.  Everything was done in our garage by the Clean Zone crew who wore protective gear.

Clean Zone Ph uses industrial-grade equipment and delicate cleaning solutions for furniture and carpets. The company is used by government institutions, hospitals, hotels, offices, and private individuals to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Having Fun Outdoors

Six years ago, I had a swimming pool built in our backyard. In hindsight, it’s the best makeover I’ve done. The whole family gets a daily dose of much-needed Vitamin D while being physically active. Our lungs get stronger, too, because of all the swimming.

Mom and Rocio in the pool: Early morning swimming is a great way to keep fit while getting that much-needed Vitamin D.

After a year of being cooped up, I decided to add another stress-buster in our yard. We surprised my husband with a  basketball court on his birthday and it’s really been keeping everybody happy. My little girl is shooting hoops all day long!

And as a surprise for my daughter on her special day, we got her a mechanized air hockey table. It’s so big that it displaced our dining table in the lanai. I never realized how physically exhausting it was to play air hockey until we got one. Nevertheless, loud, happy noises fill our home now because of the additions we’ve made.

Busy kids are healthy kids. We placed our air hockey table in the lanai so that the children can play outdoors.

One Big Family

The constant togetherness may have brought about some conflict, but there’s also loads of comfort and much love. Mealtime is so special because we gather to communicate as much as to dine. We’ve declared Fridays as wine and cheese night. I’ve also taken a liking to creating tablescapes and I’d often surprise the family with different set-ups. No gadgets are allowed at the dinner table—only the stories, fun, and laughter.

Praying together has also become a daily habit. It’s important to live a life of gratitude, so we’d always start with thanking God for daily blessings—no matter how small. Today we are praying for mercy. COVID-19 (and this is perhaps the first time I’ve mentioned the sickness) has hit close to home. My sister is now alone in the hospital fighting for her life. All because she took one unfortunate trip to the bank and got infected. Prayers are the only help we can give her.

As we continue to fight an invisible enemy, we are reminded about how short and precious life is. Thankfully in two weeks, my husband and I will get our second dose of vaccine. We have done and continue to do all that we can to survive.

However, the struggle does not stop within the confines of our walls. It is everybody’s duty to help those who are in need. Be charitable and show your kids the value of giving. Please donate to your community pantries, cook food for the village guards, offer comfort to an anxious friend, and show kindness when you can.

Make sure to get yourselves vaccinated and encourage others to do it. Every little act counts.
