These Famous Dads Share the Best Advice They’ve Told Their Kids

Beyond running successful businesses, these tycoons have wise words of advice on family and fatherhood. After all, dads know best.

The stereotypical Asian dad is portrayed as strict, driven, and unfeeling. With money and wealth as their goal for a better life, they’re tiger parents who want their kids to excel—both in school and career.

But beyond their seemingly cold exterior and “tough love”, you can count on dads to provide for you financially and give you everything you need…and more. Even if that means getting the same kind of fruit every day for a whole month just because you mentioned liking it (once!) in passing.

Although we’re familiar with the phrase “mother knows best”, I do think that dads know just as much. All you have to do is ask. And I did just that! Here are nuggets of wisdom that I’ve collected from some of the biggest business tycoons in the Philippines.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures out there!

TONY TAN CAKTIONG: Chairman and Founder of Jollibee Foods Corporation

What is your advice to your children?

[Give and] take, and exert a nice gesture or two for your family—your children. While time may seem free, it is very much finite as it is uncertain.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

Not one [verse] in particular. Just do good. Beyond counting one’s blessings, [also remember] to share a meaningful part of them and expect nothing in return.

DR. STEVE MARK GAN: President and CEO of GAOC Group of Companies

What is your advice to your children?

I have three pieces of advice for my children. [The] first is to “always be good and kind to others”. This is basic and probably the most important. Choosing to be kind also [means] treating others with fairness and respect. I always tell my kids that how you treat others is a reflection of your character and upbringing.

My second piece of advice is [to] “share your blessings”. I tell my kids that no matter how small the deed may seem, it will surely make a difference in someone’s life.

[And finally], “be the best version of yourself”. I tell them that they must focus on their strengths and always have a growth mindset.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

“Practice what you preach” has always been my life’s guiding principle. It’s as simple as doing the things that you advise other people to do. As the President and CEO of the GAOC Group of Companies, I always see to it that I lead by example. When I say something, I do it.

RAJ UTTAMCHANDANI: Chairman and CEO of Esquire Financing

What is your advice to your children?

Stay humble and do unto other as you want done unto yourself.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

Your network is your net worth. Focus on building relationships that will last.

WILLIAM TIU LIM: President and CEO of Mega Global Corporation

What is your advice to your children?

Passion and purpose precede profit. I want my children to be guided by the same values that I have always held on to, [which] have helped build Mega Global. As they envision greater things for the family business, staying grounded is imperative so as not to lose sight of what is important.

“Malasakit” is [also] a value that should first and foremost begin with our family.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

Have a vision fueled by passion, tempered by experience, [and] harnessed by focus. Everything is a learning process and growth is a mark of maturity—something vital in leading the business—which is why people and businesses that adapt are the ones that thrive.

DR. BENJAMIN S.A. CAMPOMANES: Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of St. Luke’s Medical Center

What is your advice to your children?

I’ve been very fortunate to have been given positions of opportunity and influence. But in order to make a difference in these spaces, we must remind ourselves that our work is that of service to our community. You have the power to change the world for the better. I hope [that] they will find the determination and hard work to fulfill their dreams with humility and generosity. Stay humble, kids!

What’s a life verse that you live by?

In difficult decisions involving people, always be kind.

GERRY SY: President and CEO of Intellismart Technology Inc. and Opulence Design Concept

What is your advice to your children?

Always listen to the advice of your parents. At the end of the day, your parents [only] want the best for you.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

Happy wife makes happy life.

ROSWELL LIMSUI: CEO and President of New Panay Agri-venture Development Inc.

What is your advice to your children?

Achi, I have trained my children by [letting them] “suffer”—depriving them [from] some of the good things in life temporarily. Only in this method [can], children can understand the real world. [What it means to be normal], how it feels to be down, and how to survive. But most of all, [I want them to see how all] this can develop their inner force—of desire, motivation, and [the drive to] achieve.

I believe my children hate me for this. [But] when they became parents, hopefully, they can understand my chosen method. It’s all for them. Deep inside, I’m also suffering—twice as much, [especially when I] see them suffer. [But] as a father, I hide all these emotions and show my strong sentiments.

What’s a life verse that you live by?

I have no advice for them. I believe they [are] all capable of surviving in any hard situation and condition. My only wish [is that] they can, later on, enjoy life, [experience] freedom, and help people along the way.

What are wise words of advice that your dads or father figures have shared?
