Eyeshadows x Books: The Best of Both Worlds

Much like eyeliner and mascara or eyeshadow and lipstick, Firas Abboud shares how the perfect eye makeup pairs best with a good book.

Lately, I’ve noticed several beauty releases that remind us why the wheel doesn’t have to be reinvented every single time. From MAC’s Wander.Lust. Collection to the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, and Shiseido’s Ultimune, such releases tell us that innovation doesn’t always mean something completely new. It could simply be improving or elevating what’s already there.

The Oxford dictionary defines the word innovation as “the introduction of new things, ideas, or ways of doing something”. This led me to think of a way to elevate my everyday reading experience at home.

Since I find myself looking for more reasons to wear makeup these days, I thought of something I could do to make two of my favorite worlds—makeup and books—meet. Thus, I told myself—why not adorn my eyes with eyeshadow before reading?

Here are the 10 eyeshadows I’ve worn while I was reading these 10 books:

10 Eyeshadow and Book Pairings

10. Tom Ford Photosynthesex Eye Color Quad x Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

This book is all about being one with nature, and I instantly knew that this quad would be its perfect match. In addition to the name, the beautiful colors just reflect the story of Kya, “The Marsh Girl,” and represent how integral nature is to her story.

9. Strokes Eye Paint Duo x Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Homegoing tells the stories of two half-sisters and their descendants—covering eight generations. Since it highlights the duality of human experience, the Strokes Eye Paint Duo was the right choice. Matte on one side and a sheer metallic shimmer on the other, this dual-ended liquid eyeshadow is a definite home run.

8. Sunnies Face Eyecrayons x Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion

I find Joan Didion to be such a cool and effortless writer, which is why the Sunnies Face Eyecrayons was a no-brainer. I could just imagine Joan Didion casually coloring her lids with a random shade before writing each essay in this book.

7. Generation Happy Skin Pretty Easy Soft Touch Eyeshadows x Do I Make Myself Clear by Harold Evans

With shades such as A+, Pop Quiz, Study Hall, and Spring Break, these Happy Skin eyeshadows were an obvious choice, especially since I felt like going back to school through this book. And yes, writing well matters.

6. Teviant Horus Eyeshadow Palette x This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel

Laurie Frankel wrote such an important and relevant novel about acceptance and the struggles that go with it. Thus, a book that tells a multifaceted and sparkling story deserves the Teviant Horus Eyeshadow Palette, which features pressed glitter, metallic, and multi-chrome eyeshadows.

5. Clocheflame All Around Flush x Trese Vol. 1 by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo

I remember feeling so proud when Trese made the headlines, prompting me to watch the series and read the book. Knowing that the book is proudly Filipino, I just had to wear Clocheflame’s All-Around Flush. It’s the perfect colorful juxtaposition to Trese!

4. MAC Cruella To Be Kind Eyeshadow Palette x Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

Why not match a famous villain with a villain trope, right? That’s exactly what was on my mind when I decided to wear this particular palette while reading this gothic horror and vampire novel. Unlike vampires, however, this palette works for both day and night makeup looks.

3. Spotlight Scene Stealer Gel Eyeshadow x The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Since the beauty of Dorian Gray never fails to steal any scene, it was befitting to wear Spotlight’s Scene Stealer Gel Eyeshadow. By the way, I did feel like I was painting using my fingers with the gel eyeshadows, which, in return, mirrors one of the book’s literary devices.

2. Olivia Palermo for Ciaté London Smokey Suedes Eye Palette x Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington

Olivia Palermo and Grace Coddington are two of my favorite names in fashion, which was why I had to match one with the other. Needless to say, I love the palette and the book. Plus, they were both extra special because I had to hunt them down. I bought the palette on Shopee and the book on Carousell!

1. NARS St Germain Des Prés Eyeshadow Palette x Boy Erased by Garrard Conley

This NARS eyeshadow palette is part of the Claudette Collection, which is inspired by the mother and muse of François Nars. Just like the palette, Boy Erased touches on the powerful relationship of a son with his mother. A match made in heaven, if you ask me.

Now, I must admit that I don’t wear eyeshadow every single time I read. However, this newfound practice of mine never fails to excite me. Plus, it adds more color—literally and figuratively—to the world of makeup and books.

I wonder what match I’ll come up with next.
