6 Candidates Hoping for a Political Comeback in the 2022 Elections
In a sea of re-electionists for various national and local posts in next year’s elections, a handful of candidates are seeking to make their political comebacks.
The elections might still be in May of next year, but we already have an idea of the candidates who are vying for both national and local posts. Though things may still change until the final list is out, it’s safe to say that people already have their bets in mind.
Most of the hopefuls in the upcoming 2022 elections have different goals in mind. Some are hoping for another term in the same position they’re holding. On the other hand, others are seeking a different post in order to stay in the government. Likewise, there are many first-timers on the list, as well as those who are trying their luck once more after losing in the last elections.
There are also a handful of candidates who are crossing their fingers for a political comeback in the 2022 elections. What’s more, there are candidates who currently don’t have any position in government and would like to return to politics.
Here are 6 individuals who are hoping to make a comeback in the upcoming 2022 elections:
6. Antonio Trillanes IV

Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV is the first candidate on this list who is hoping to make a senate comeback next year.
What’s more, Antonio Trillanes IV announced his senatorial bid just hours after Vice President Leni Robredo announced her candidacy for president. He served as a senator of the country for two terms that lasted from 2007 to 2013. Likewise, he ran for vice president in the 2016 elections but lost to Leni Robredo.
5. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Known as the only son of the late President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s political career started when he became vice-governor of Ilocos Norte. He eventually became the province’s governor in 1983 and held the position until 1998.
Bongbong Marcos served as the second district representative of Ilocos Norte for two terms before he was elected senator in 2010.
4. Jejomar Binay

For as long as anyone can remember, Jejomar “Jojo” Binay is best known as the mayor of Makati—a position he held for a total of six terms. He was appointed as the Makati mayor by the late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino in 1986 before being elected by the citizens two years later. All in all, Jejomar Binay was the mayor of Makati from 1986 to 1998 and then from 2001 to 2010.
Jejomar Binay then went from being a city mayor to being the vice president of the Philippines in 2010 during the presidency of the late Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. He ran for president in the 2016 elections but eventually lost to then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. The former vice president tried to run for Congress three years after but lost once more.
3. Jinggoy Estrada

Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada has two sons hoping to make a senate comeback next year. One of them is Jose Ejercito Jr., who is better known as Jinggoy Estrada.
An actor just like his father, Jinggoy Estrada’s political career launched when he won as the vice mayor of San Juan in 1988. He then became mayor of the city in 1992—all the way until 2001. It wasn’t until 2004, however, that Jinggoy Estrada became a senator and served under the Congress until 2016. He ran for senator once more in 2019 but ultimately finished outside the top 12.
2. JV Ejercito

Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito—the second son of former President Erap Estrada—is eyeing a senate comeback in next year’s polls. JV’s attempt at a political comeback comes just after an almost three-year absence from politics.
JV Estrada began his political career as the mayor of San Juan for three terms, which lasted from 2001 to 2010. He then became the representative of the lone district of the city. Eventually, the former congressman made a jump to the senate when he won a seat during the 2013 elections and served as a senator until 2019. However, JV Ejercito finished 13th in the senate race of the 2019 elections.
1. Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr.

Jaworski is a very well-known surname both in politics and in the game of basketball—especially among fans of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Next year, one Jaworski is hoping to make his return to politics as he runs for a local post.
Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr.—son of basketball legend and former senator Robert Jaworski—is running for vice mayor of Pasig. Incumbent Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, who is seeking re-election, asked Dodot Jaworski to be his running mate. Dodot Jaworski started his political career as a councilor of San Juan from 1995 to 1998 before becoming the representative of Pasig’s lone district in 2004.
With how fast time can move, it won’t be long before the 2022 elections are right around the corner. Until then, take the time to get to know all the candidates so that you can vote wisely next year.
