A Danish word for coziness and comfortable conviviality, hygge is a way of life embraced by many. Here’s how you can achieve it at home.
The “Ber” months have caught up with us once again, and by now, we’ve really gotten accustomed to a new normal style of home living. In fact, our houses have transitioned into a hybrid pod for work, play, school, restaurant, spa, lounge, and everything in between!
Although some of us have already become pros at new normal living, being under the same roof and in the same room for quite a long time can still feel monotonous. But as they say, our realities lie in our mindsets, daily habits, and our overall lifestyles.
Changing up the usual positions of your furniture and home decor can feel quite like magic! Plus, it can make you feel like you’re in a completely different room. What’s more, keeping rooms clutter-free and refreshed can really help your mind relax.
Try rearranging simple placements of decor from one corner to another. Maybe change up the color scheme of your bedroom linens, or simply add fresh new flowers to your space! I’ve been loving my fresh lime and fuschia, and yellow and pink fresh orchids from VIVI by Flossom.
2. Incorporate Morning and Evening Home Spa Routines
Nothing relaxes like a warm shower at night. Not only is it good for your nerves, but it also helps you sleep better at night. I’ve been incorporating these new bath time goodies into my routine for that home spa feel and they’re just so amazing!
This tip is often heard, but it’s way easier said than done. With all our life’s external and internal stressors, being calm and living mindfully human beings can sometimes feel like a rare, fleeting, and abstract opportunity.
But did you know that an emotion’s chemical lifespan in the body and brain only lasts 90 seconds? Everything else we feel after is caused by our own associations to that emotion. I broke down more about this in my podcast episode on dealing with stress and anxiety featuring Mind Nation. Give it a listen for free via Apple or Spotify podcasts, and follow us for more Rise Up episodes too!
The next one will be about how to achieve better sleep backed up by science, and stress management! Stay tuned!
Another combo I love to practice mindfulness with is journaling while having my cup of coffee! It’s a pet peeve of mine though when my coffee gets cold, so my new rose gold insulated Corkcicle cup from Unlimited Manila is my new fave! I love its cute shape too!
And for my journal, this Morning & Evening Journal by Sense Society is great! It’s a simple AM and PM journal with only a few lines to help you set the tone of your day, and reflect on all the things you’re grateful for at night! I love its minimalist design, too! Though, I’ve also been having fun by adding stickers inside!
4. Liven up Your Appetites!
Speaking of gratefulness, I’ve noticed that a constant thing I mention in my gratitude list is my favorite meal of the day! It helps too that so many new local businesses are stepping up their game in serving us delicious food for the soul. Plus, they’re great to look at, too! Here are some of my recent favorites:
Hot Kiss Kitchen
These gourmet tacos with premium flour tortillas, sushi tacos, and mochi donuts by Hot Kiss Kitchen taste as great as they look! A rare combo nowadays.
Infinity Gourmet Foods
If you’re a fan of sushi, turn your dining tables into your very own zen Japanese restaurant by ordering these sushi trays and platters from Infinity Gourmet Foods.
Another favorite is these savory butter puff pastries from Bar.Dough! Such a winning snack, inspired by the famous Singapore Curry Puff! Comes in Tuna Tomato and Tuna Curry. Yum!
5. Take Good Sleep and Relaxation to Another Level
Exceptional sleep is one of the fundamental pillars of a life well-lived. But more often than not, it feels more like a rare opportunity (luxury, even!), especially with the tone of our times. Good thing there are simple hacks to turn great sleep into a reality, and not just an abstract fantasy.
Just like Goldilocks looking for the perfect bed to rest in… our pillows play a huge role in our ability to fall asleep better. And I’ve found the best head pillow so far! Not too hard, and not too soft. Not too warm, and not too cold! It’s called the Micro Touch Hybrid Memory Fibre Pillow from Comforcel! It has gel-infused memory foam, great airflow, and a Tencel Nature Fibre Cover.
It’s also eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, and machine washable! You can try yours by ordering online via comforcel.com
To help me wind down to better sleep, relaxing scents also help a lot! Candles, aromatic room scents, and diffusers go a long way to set the mood, but Yoga Love is a game-changer in the relaxation department. The cooling cream smells like your best spa dream alive, and it’s not just for your olfactory senses! You get to apply it to your body to help relieve stress and muscle tension, too! It’s great for massages at home, or even as a pick-me-up when you’re in need of a calmness boost any time of the day!
They’ve recently expanded into essential oil roll-ons too for the head and pressure points! Safe to say, I am a huge fan. And anyone who tries it will definitely be a repeat customer! It’s very addicting and does the job. It has saved me from sudden dizziness in the car, and my mom from her stiff neck, too! Plus, they also have Sanitizing Sprays with Essential Oils for that zen home vibe, minus the germs!
So, why not hygge from home ourselves especially now that the coziest season, Christmas, is just around the corner? A cozy season calls for cozy living in the simplest ways possible! Remember to take things one day at a time, and never take for granted the little things, especially in these uncertain times. That’s it for now!
