10 Netflix Travel Series That Will Fuel Your Wanderlust

The ongoing pandemic has made it difficult to travel around the world. While we’re all stuck at home, here are 10 Netflix travel series to tide us over.

The still-present pandemic—paired with all the lockdowns, quarantines, and travel restrictions—has made it so difficult to be a tourist for more than a year and a half now. Even if other countries are slowly opening up their borders to foreign tourists, the ever-present threat of the virus still makes many people hesitate to travel. Then, of course, there’s the accompanying legwork of quarantines and securing proper documents for travel.

For sure, staying put at home for almost two years now has made you long for the queues at the airport that once annoyed you, the chance to see new cultures and places, and even the occasional airplane turbulence that might make you grip your seat for dear life.

10 Netflix Travel Series That Will Fuel Your Wanderlust

And so, to tide you over until the next time you can travel again, here’s a rundown of 10 Netflix shows that are all about travel. They may not be as good as actually traveling, but they’re the next best thing for now.

And who knows? These places may just be part of your travel plans in the future—especially when things are a lot safer than it is now.

10. Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby

For many tourists, staying in a beautiful hotel is one of the highlights of their trips abroad. If you’re that kind of traveler, Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby features the world’s best and most luxurious hotels. These include the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, Royal Mansour in Morocco, the Icehotel in Sweden, and The Silo in South Africa.

The series, however, does not spend two seasons just marveling at the wonderful architecture and amenities of these hotels. Giles Joren and Monica Galetti also look at how these hotels are run and the people who make it so that each guest has a memorable experience that is worth what they paid for.

Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby can be streamed on Netflix.

9. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Ever wondered what it’s like to travel with a celebrity? Well, Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner can give you an idea of that.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner is a documentary television series that features chef David Chang and his celebrity guests as they tour cities and eat their way throughout the trip. Celebrity guests in this one-season series include Seth Rogen, who tours Vancouver with the chef, and Chrissy Teigen, who travels with David to Marrakech.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner can be streamed on Netflix.

8. Dark Tourist

Believe it or not, dark tourism is a thing among tourists. This refers to those who like to visit places that are considered morbid or tragic. But if you’re still not sure what constitutes dark tourism, the lone season of Dark Tourist gives viewers a better idea of it.

In the series, journalist David Farrier goes around the world to experience dark tourism for himself. Some activities and locations featured in Dark Tourist include dining with so-called vampires in New Orleans, a voodoo festival in Benin, and swimming in a lake in Kazakhstan that was actually formed by a nuclear blast.

Dark Tourist can be streamed on Netflix

7. Down to Earth with Zac Efron

If the image of Zac Efron you have in your head is still his character Troy Bolton from High School Musical, be prepared to see a different side of him in Down to Earth with Zac Efron.

In this web documentary series, Zac Efron visits different locations around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien. Together, they showcase different ways of sustainable and healthy living that people are practicing in different parts of the planet. Destinations visited in the series include Iceland, Puerto Rico, and an eco-village in Costa Rica.

Down to Earth with Zac Efron can be streamed on Netflix

6. Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father

Those who’ve gone on multiple trips with family know that while it is all mostly fun and happy memories, sometimes things can go south way too easily. Comic Jack Whitehall spends five seasons of the show traveling with his father, Michael, in Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father and becomes a perfect example of it.

Jack goes on multiple trips with his father, who is, as the Netflix description calls, “stuffy.” What viewers get in return are amusing moments and even endearing scenes. Among the destinations that the father-and-son duo visit includes Siem Reap in Cambodia, Sydney in Australia, and even Chernobyl in Ukraine.

Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father can be streamed on Netflix.

5. Magical Andes

South America isn’t very accessible to people traveling from the Philippines due to its location and lack of straight flights. If the countries in this continent are part of your travel bucket list, be sure to check out Magical Andes.

Magical Andes takes viewers on a journey across the world’s longest continental mountain range. Other than getting the chance to marvel at the breathtaking sights of nature that the Andes provide, viewers will also get to hear the stories of the people who share a special connection with the mountains.

Magical Andres can be streamed on Netflix.

4. Secrets of Great British Castles

Anyone who finds the British royal family and its history very interesting should totally check out Secrets of Great British Castles.

Secrets of Great British Castles visits one castle per episode and dives deeper into its history, too. Among the castles explored in the two-season series are Edinburgh Castle, which is known for the murders that took place there, and The Tower of London, which has a history of rather infamous events.

Secrets of Great British Castles can be streamed on Netflix.

3. Tales by Light

As comedian Pee-Wee Herman once said in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, “Why don’t you take a picture? It’ll last longer.” That’s exactly what the photographers and filmmakers featured in Tales by Light did. They took awe-inspiring photos and the series takes a closer at how they were able to capture these monumental images.

Undersea photographer Shawn Heinrichs—who captures photos of ocean life in an effort to help preserve it—and Peter Eastway, who travels all the way to Antarctica to capture polar images, are featured in this series.

Tales by Light can be streamed on Netflix.

2. Twogether

K-Pop and K-Drama fans might know Lee Seung-gi for his hit songs, his roles in dramas such as My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and his stints at 1 Night 2 Days and Strong Heart. What many may not know, however, is that Lee Seung-gi also had a one-season travel show called Twogether.

In Twogether, the South Korean actor goes on a trip across Asia with Taiwanese actor Jasper Liu. The duo visit destinations, such as Yogyakarta in Indonesia, Bangkok in Thailand, and Pokhara in Nepal, while even encountering their fans along the way.

Twogether can be streamed on Netflix

1. The Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

Not all tourists like to stay in hotels when they go on a vacation. And if you’re the type of traveler who prefers to stay in vacation rentals instead, The Most Amazing Vacation Rentals is a series you should totally binge on.

This series is two seasons long and each season has a total of eight episodes. In every episode, travelers Megan Batoon, Luis D. Ortiz, and Jo Franco check out some of the coolest vacation rentals around the world that fit both the budget-friendly category and the luxurious market. In fact, some of the vacation rentals you can expect in the series are a floating mansion in Miami, an igloo in Finland, and a cabin with a private waterfall in Hawaii.

The Most Amazing Vacation Rentals can be streamed on Netflix.

Even just a few episodes of these Netflix travel shows will make you want to grab your passport and book your next flight. But remember, always keep yourself safe and healthy, especially during these times.
