10 Essential Supplements to Keep Dads in Good Shape

Multivitamins are a must, but supplements are just as important. We round up 10 must-haves that dads (or men, for that matter) need, stat!

Being a great dad requires a lot out of a man. And, one of the greatest gifts he can give to his kids is to ensure he is in great health and great shape to be the best father he can be.

Apart from eating healthy and exercising, key vitamins and supplements are important. It’s a given that complete multivitamins have good absorbability, so, this list won’t be tackling your basics like Vitamin C, Calcium, Vitamin D, and the like. Though I’d like to emphasize that vitamins and supplements made from real food should still be prioritized over those that are synthetically produced.

Some may argue that we can get all the nutrition we need from food. But in reality, today’s fast-paced lifestyle can make that difficult. Especially since the quality of food being produced serves the demands of an “instant” world. Thus, eating supplements can spell the difference between a good and great state of health.

Here are some supplements that can help dads (or any man for that matter) stay in tip-top shape:

1. Horny Goat Weed (HGW)

Known as “nature’s Viagra”, horny goat weed (HGW) contains icariin—a substance that helps block the PDE5 protein responsible for erectile dysfunction. HGW can also help increase testosterone levels circulating in the body, leading to a heightened libido, improved sexual performance, and better endurance

2. L-Arginine

L-arginine is a popular supplement among weightlifters and bodybuilders. It’s an essential amino acid that aids in the building, repair, and recovery of muscles. But, apart from this function, L-Arginine also helps with healing wounds and improving male fertility. Similarly, L-arginine can aid in lowering blood pressure

3. Saw Palmetto

Prostate health becomes a worry for men as they age. A great way to maintain a healthy prostate is through saw palmetto supplements. Studies have shown that saw palmetto berries have aided in blocking the growth of prostate cancer cells. Plus, it helps prevent benign prostate hyperplasia (prostate enlargement).

4. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

As we age, our body’s Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels drop. Thus, taking supplements is a great way to increase this. This powerful antioxidant contributes greatly to heart health and may help prevent heart attacks and aid in alleviating high blood pressure.

5. Magnesium

Bone health and osteoporosis are not just issues for women. Men need to be mindful of their bone health as well. Apart from calcium, a good dose of magnesium is key for healthy bones. Magnesium also helps with nervous system regulation and better mood or brain function. After all, studies have shown that there is a link between low magnesium levels and depression.

If you cannot tolerate taking magnesium orally, another way to get it into your body is through oils and sprays applied topically on the fatty parts of your body.

6. Glucosamine and Chondroitin with Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

As we age, the fluids lubricating our joints deplete and the cartilage becomes thinner. Since glucosamine is a component of healthy cartilage, taking that supplement has been found to encourage cartilage regeneration. And that, in turn, helps prevent osteoarthritis

On the other hand, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is usually found in conjunction with glucosamine supplements. MSM has anti-inflammatory properties, which are helpful for those who are experiencing joint pains. It has also been shown to slow down cartilage degeneration

7. Probiotics

You may have heard the saying “everything starts with a healthy gut”. A great way to get one is through probiotic supplementation. No, I am not talking about those sugar-laden probiotic drinks or those heavily flavored and sweetened yogurt packs. There are better options out there like probiotic capsules or fermented food like kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut

The key here is to find one that is rich with probiotics (in the billions) and one with multiple beneficial strains. In general, probiotics benefit anyone by helping boost the immune system, aid in better digestion, and support colon health. But, for men, probiotics can actually help with prostate health, sperm count, and may even help raise testosterone levels in the body

8. Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a compound commonly found in the skin and in the seeds of red grapes. More often than not, it’s associated with red wine. This powerful antioxidant has been found to help lower blood pressure, fight free radicals, fight cancer cells—all in one small supplement.

Take note, though, that just because red wine has resveratrol does not mean you should go chugging down bottle after bottle. One glass of red has about 2mg of resveratrol, while a typical capsule has 500mg. So, if you want the full benefit of Resveratrol, go for the tablets instead.

9. Omega-3

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid found in fish (salmon, tuna, and other fatty fish), seeds (think flaxseeds, chia seeds), and oils (flaxseed oil). But you can also take the supplement version. These benefit your body by lowering your triglycerides, improving overall heart health, which prevents blood clots and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, omega-3s lessen bodily inflammations, plus also help aesthetically by improving your skin and nail health.

And since omega-3 helps with blood clotting and circulation, it has also been found to help with erectile dysfunction

10. Maca Root

Maca root—also known as “Peruvian ginseng”—is a supplement popularly recommended to help increase sex drive and fertility. Studies have shown significant improvement in sperm count and motility for men who take at least 450 mg of maca per day for a minimum period of 2 weeks. Additionally, women benefit from this wonder herb as it has been found to help alleviate menopausal symptoms.
