June 12, 2018, marks the 120th day of independence of the Philippines from Spain. This same day back in 1898, the country’s National Flag was first flown at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. The country was a colony of Spain for 333 years.

It being a holiday, Filipinos usually spend the day bonding with their families and friends. Aside from this tradition, there are other notable events taking place in commemoration of the special day.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement joining the Filipino community in Canada in celebrating Philippine Independence Day. In his statement, he said that Canada “looks forward to continue working with the Philippines on bilateral and global issues.” In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, Trudeau also mentioned in his statement that they shall “recognize the important contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community” to their national fabric.

In local news, rail systems MRT-3 and LRT-1 offer free rides to all passengers in celebration of the holiday. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., commuters may avail of the free train rides.

Frequent internet users definitely have their own way of joining the celebration. Filipino netizens has once again revived #rp612fic on Twitter, now somehow an online tradition. The hashtag stands for Republic of the Philippines, June 12, Fiction. Netizens tweet posts that combine Philippine history with humor and creativity, much like making an internet meme.

One Mega Group, in unity with the Filipino people, also has its own special way of commemorating the country’s independence. On June 12th for the fourth year now, One Mega holds The New PH, a social media campaign that aims to uphold Pinoy pride. Significant personalities are gathered in a grand ball to honor those who make the country a nation to be proud of.
