French Open: Nadal Proves That He Is King of Clay
June 11, 2018
Rafael Nadal once again proves his prowess in clay as he wins his 11th French Open title, his 17th in Grand Slams. He defeated Dominic Thiem in three straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-2. Consequently, he is three Grand Slam titles away from Roger Federer’s Grand Slam record.
Nadal and his road to victory
Nadal was the clear favorite to win Roland Garros this year after claiming titles in the clay courts of Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Rome. Winning the French Open wasn’t exactly easy even with his experience at the Philippe Chatrier Court. On the way to the finals, he beat Richard Gasquet, Diego Schwartzman, and another crowd favorite, Juan Martin del Potro.
On the women’s side, Simona Halep won her maiden Grand Slam title, defeating Sloane Stephens, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Coming from one-sided first set, the Romanian powered through the succeeding sets. And in the end, Halep was finally able to hold the trophy after coming second on three past occasions.
We are just as jubilant as Rafa and Simona for winning their titles. Congratulate them in the comments below.
